It's the time when bees are swarming and you may think you want to capture a swarm. Well, that is one way of getting bees. But, then what do you do? How do you manage this swarm of feral bees? You won't want to miss this lively conversation, with helpful hints, thoughts from many who have begun beekeeping this way. Please remember, that proper beekeeping management is a must, and safe beekeeping practices are your responsibility! We are here to guide you in the right direction. Zoom link, below.

It will also be a time for you to ask many questions! So bring them! We will be asking all of you new beekeepers and those of you who haven't gotten bees lots of questions. So don't be shy. Discussions about all the available bee suits and protective gear will be discussed. Everyone has their favorites, and they will tell you why.

February 24, 2022

We continue learning about bees and helping beginning beekeepers answer the questions that are on their mind. We have a full meeting of fun and information. If you would like to be on our mailing list, and not sure if you would like to join, then click on the Mailing List tab above. We look forward to seeing on Zoom.

The tiny little pest, Varroa Destructor, and what we can do to help our hives using IMP and other options will be the topic for this month as we continue to meet on Zoom. Learning about Varroa and bee life cycles will help us. While there are many ways to keep bees, as a club, we offer suggestions, and often have very knowledgeable speakers sharing their insight into best management practices and what’s new in science. All of us share our insights and offer our experiences up for discussion. We are proud to have a club where everyone respects each other’s opinions and treats each other with the care that continues to make us an inviting and well-respected community-oriented club. We hope you will join us this month.

July 22, 2021

We were hoping to have an in-person meeting , but we are still doing Zoom. It’s been great! Everyone can hear the discussion and see all your smiling faces. We have about 85 members, now! Plus all of you who are on the fence about joining. Remember, it’s only $20, and you get your money’s worth by attending just one class. Bill Gibson will be talking about honey-extracting equipment. He and his son Gavin will be sharing the well-made video (check out our Links tab for the link, under Videos). Teaching children, as well as adults, about bees is the topic.

June 24, 2021

We continue with our Zoom meetings which are going very well. It’s awesome to see all your faces, if not in person. We have so many discussion topics planned for this meeting. You won’t want to miss it! To do something, or not to do something, that is the general idea, but many topics.

May 27, 2021

Our May meeting will be filled with information on volunteering positions for you as a mentor as well as classes that are available. Mostly, this meeting will be a time of learning about all that is happening in our hives in June in our area of the LA Basin. We have prepared questions for you to answer, and we will be taking your questions, as our “experts” will try and get them all answered. We look forward to meeting all you new beekeepers as well as our members.

April 22, 2021

Joan Day will present Bee Anatomy at this month’s meeting. She has shared this before, but is always learning new things. Her videos and pictures tell a great story to go along with her presentation. You won’t want to miss it.

Christine Kurtz is a seasoned and experienced beekeeper with over a decade long work with bees, using a sustainable, treatment free and all natural management style. Long time Sonoma County resident, she is familiar with the ebbs and flows of the seasons and the cycle of the local honeybee. A strong believer in supporting locally adapted stock of bees, helping beekeepers become better beekeepers and help each other restock and share their bees. She is a social entrepreneur that helped create localized communities within the Sonoma County Beekeepers’ Association to facilitate education, connection between beekeepers, sharing of resources and involvement in local schools and events. She is an environmental activist determined to share the strong messages bees have for us all especially with the challenges we face with our environment. In her 2013 term as President of Sonoma County Beekeepers’ Association, and tenure within the SCBA Board of Director - she spearheaded efforts that lead to the 2013 North Bay Leadership Award - “Paint the Community Green” for outstanding work in the non-profit area. She was a part of the panel at UC Davis Honey and Pollination Center that defined the “Honey Wheel”. Christine was honored in 2014 with “Most Valuable Beekeeper” within the Sonoma County Beekeepers’ Association and also the start of her Honey Bee Consulting Business. She travels all over Sonoma, Napa and Marin County helping people with their bees. In 2015 after a year long study of Permaculture she got her Permaculture Certificate concentrating on water management on her property to lower the impact of this precious resource to use to maintain a large organic garden. With her lives her husband of 29 years, 15 chickens, a goats, 2 dogs, a cat and an ebb and flow of between 10 and 25 hives. Her stationary hives are located in Petaluma, California in a semi coastal climate with long periods of dearth which often leaves the honey in the hive till Fall to make sure bees have enough of their own food to survive winter before any is harvested. Believing in lifelong learning, Christine is furthering her education about honey bees with Queen Rearing, continuing her studies in Permaculture and is currently in the Master Beekeepers Program at UC Davis about to start a research project on entombed pollen.

Re-queening our hive is a subject that we should all be able to discuss with our beekeeping friends. But, when do we re-queen? How do we do it? And, most importantly, why would we re-queen? There are so many scenarios taking place during the year that would require this task. If you would like to hear our presentation by Mark Haag and Sean Crowley, you will want to be present at this meeting. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussions.

Rob Stone is a partner at Orange County Beekeeping Supplies. He is a past President of the Orange County Beekeepers Association.  He kept bees here in Orange County as a youngster and restarted again in 2009. He keeps about 30 colonies between  a bee yard in Irvine and in the High Desert.  He believes strongly in keeping gentle bees, and offers advice to customers visiting the store in Fullerton,  Calif. Tonight's presentation 'Reading the Combs' focuses on determining the health of a honeybee colony by examining the brood combs. This is an important task during any hive inspection, but is not often taught.  Both new and experienced beekeepers enjoy this presentation as it is highly interactive, audience participation is welcome.

While you are lying in your hammock enjoying a glass of lemonade, summer is the time the bees are working in their colonies.  They may be bringing in nectar and/or pollen, water, and even old propolis.  They never take a day off.          Hopefully, you have your honey supers on and can feel them getting heavier and heavier.                                                              So, while they are busy, we need to take time to repair our frames.  If you need new wire, or you need to tighten the wire you have, or even strengthen your frames or replace eyelets, this meeting will be filled with experienced beekeepers sharing the way they repair frames.  As Dick shows us all the different scenarios of repairs on various frames, feel free to chime in, if you have something to add.  Bring a frame you may have issues with. Even bring a favorite tool you use to make repairs.  This will help all of us save $$$, and that will help our bottom line.              Please come early to help set chairs up, if you have time.  Check to see which room we are in.                                                            If you would like to bring any refreshments, you are welcome to do so.                                                                                                    See you at the meeting: 6:30 sharp!

What!  You didn't get all the information you need to collect those swarms from last month's meeting?  You're in luck!  We're going to continue our lively discussion of swarms.  This month, we'll be learning much about how L.L. Langstroth insured that his swarms were taken care of, ready to go strong into the fall and winter and come out strong in the beginning of spring.
As always, we have many knowledgeable beekeepers willing to answer your questions.  Please bring them to the meeting.
If you happen to have anything you'd like to donate for the raffle, please bring it the night of our meeting.  Much appreciated.
During the break, we're going to be able to taste honey from Mexico, Peru, New Zeland, and Downey.  If you have any honey you'd love people to taste, please bring it.
After the break, Dick will show us how to repair our frames for reuse.  We all need to save a little money, and this will really help!
See you Thursday at 6:30.  Come early, if you like.

Swarms, swarms, swarms!  Yes, it's the season to talk about them, capture them, give them a new home, and learn how to care for them.

Come to this month's meeting where will give you the how to's of swarm catching.

MARCH 22, 2018

What's blooming in your yard?  Avocado and orange trees?  Flowers?  Are your hives prepared for the honey flow?  Have you ever wondered about the beginnings and endings of the Buckfast Bees?  Have you begun pulling honey off your hive?  Too early for your bees?  We all love watching our bees at the entrance of the hive.  Maybe we grab a cup of tea or coffee and sit out there in the morning hoping they will do something exciting and fun, and you will learn just one more thing that they are trying to tell you.  Or, you get up early, drive an hour to your 75-hive apiary, hoping to get inspections in before the sun causes the sweat to begin dripping into your eyes.  Either way, finding time to attend our meeting will always bring laughter, joy, and new friendships. At our March meeting, all these items will be discussed, and many more.  Come join us as spring is quickly upon us.

Propolis? What's that, you ask?  What's all that sticky stuff in the hive? Should I just scrape it out and throw it away?  No!!  You will learn all the benefits of the "bee's penicillin."

It's time to share what you've seen in your hive this past month, and what are you going to do about it.

Knowledgeable beekeepers will answer all your questions.

Speaker - Mark Haag

Mark Haag, Lecturer and Instructor in the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Dept. at the Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture, at Cal Poly Pomona will be our presenter this month.

Bees, bee classes, beekeeping students!  That's what's happening in the new acreage that's been put under his care this year, and hopefully for years to come. We are excited to partner with them as they build this new Apiary from the ground up.  Come and be part of this exciting time when Mark shares with us all that's going into this new project.

Cynthia joined us in July to encourage us to sign up for shifts at the Los Angeles County Fair.  This is our main fundraiser that allows us to pay for special speakers.  You don't need to have much beekeeping experience, as this is a time for you to share with the public, especially the children, and learn a lot while having fun.  Look in your inbox for the link to sign up for your shift at the LA County Fair.
